Cherries have always been my favorite fruit, and as a self-confessed chocoholic, I find the chocolate and cherry combination highly addictive. I’ve been making chocolate cherry smoothies ever since I received my Vitamix a few years ago, but for the past few months there has been a frozen cherry shortage, and I just can’t bring myself to stand in the kitchen and pit the amount fresh cherries required to make a sufficiently sized smoothie. When I recently saw that my local Whole Foods had frozen cherries in stock again, I bought all of the bags they had. Yep, I was that person who see in front of you in the checkout line buying so much of one thing that you’re left wondering “What is she planning on doing with all of that? Stockpiling it for the zombie apocalypse?” Truth be told, they only had seven bags in stock, so I didn’t look that crazy, and I’ve been plowing through those bags pretty quickly making my favorite smoothie. Cherries are full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, and raw cacao contains lots of protein, fiber and magnesium, among other things. Raw cacao is also really good for a natural energy boost. This smoothie also contains hemp for protein and spinach for vitamins and minerals, so it’s the perfect drink to give you a big boost!
This Chocolate Cherry Smoothie is perfect for breakfast, and it also makes an excellent afternoon snack!
- 1½ cup frozen cherries
- 1 banana, frozen or fresh
- 2 tablespoons hemp seeds
- 2 tablespoons raw cocao powder or nibs
- 2 big handfuls of spinach
- 1 cup coconut water or non-diary milk
- Mix all of the ingredients together in a blender until smooth. Enjoy!
