Treat yourself to a vegan chocolate shake! This decadent drink is actually a healthy green smoothie in disguise. It's made with good-for-you ingredients like banana, avocado, kale, and flax meal. Enjoy it for breakfast, dessert, or even a snack! This easy recipe is vegan and gluten-free.

It's hot here. Like breaking a sweat just getting the mail from mailbox kind of hot. On days like this, I don't want to even think about warm food. I do have air-conditioning, but it still seems too hot to cook.

I like to start my days with simple, cooling breakfast foods, like green smoothies, overnight oats, and chia puddings. This chocolate shake fits the bill. It looks (and tastes) like a decadent treat, but it's loaded with healthy ingredients.

A chocolate shake is a great afternoon pick-me-up on sweltering days, too. And because it's so tasty, you can also serve it for dessert!

    What You Need

    • Haas avocado
    • Banana
    • Cocoa powder
    • Flax meal
    • Kale
    • Soy or almond milk
    • Ice cubes

See the recipe card for exact amounts.

How to Make a Chocolate Shake

Making your shake couldn't be easier. You simply throw all of the ingredients into a blender and puree until it's smooth.

    Recipe Notes

    • I like to double or triple the recipe and freeze some of it in a mason jar, so it's ready when I have a hankering. I defrost the jar in the fridge or on the countertop.
    • A little unflavored protein powder can be added for an extra boost.

    40 Days of Green Smoothies

I drink green smoothies for breakfast almost every day. I tend to get in a rut, making my favorite cherry smoothie most of the time. Fortunately, my friend Becky Striepe is here to help me mix things up with her book 40 Days of Green Smoothies!

As you would guess from the title 40 Days of Green Smoothies is full of recipes for green smoothies! Becky breaks the 40 days down into 6 weeks, and she gives a shopping list along with tips for each one, making it easy to manage.

    Green Smoothie Challenge

I’m on day four of my green smoothie challenge. Day one’s smoothie was a simple yet delicious Strawberry Banana Smoothie. Day two’s was a lush banana filled Bananarama. Yesterday’s smoothie was a decadent, yet healthy, Chocolate Shake. I’m looking forward to the tasty smoothies in the weeks ahead, such as the Chocolate Covered Strawberry Smoothie and the Almost Horchata.

This is totally my kind of smoothie. I love putting cocoa powder in green smoothies, it totally makes me feel like I'm drinking something bad.

This sounds wonderful! I love the velvety quality that an avocado provides in a smoothie.

By the way, you wrote, "I had been drinking green smoothies for breakfast for quite a while, but someone I fell of the wagon." I think you meant that somewhere you fell off the wagon. 🙂

I love chocolatey smoothies and it really helps hide the greenness which can be off-putting to some. Becky's book sounds awesome and I love that its budget friendly. Smoothie making can get expensive!

I love this book! I do smoothies almost daily, but it's easy to get stuck in a rut. It's nice to have all of these creative options!

Well you had me at chocolate...I'll do any chocolate smoothie and I love that it's so easy to hide greens in them! I still need to get back to you about the book. As you have heard it's been a bit crazy but it's on my list!

I love how this recipe uses ingredients I regularly have on hand! I'm not a big fan of smoothie books that call for expensive, exotic ingredients - this one looks like it hits the "everyday" mark!

I love this chocolate smoothie, it looks so rich and decadent! I'm not a big smoothie person, especially with greens, so the cocoa powder really helps to hide them well! I've never tried avocado in a smoothie before either. I know it's popular but I'm afraid I'll taste it, lol! This looks so promising though. What a wonderful book to do on all smoothies!

You can never go wrong with chocolate! I don't think you'd be able to taste the avocado.
